I have always had a soft spot for sneakers. Not just the practical, sensible kind you reluctantly put on because a day involves walking, but the genuinely beautiful kind: the pair that makes an outfit feel modern, effortless and slightly cooler than it did five minutes earlier.

A good sneaker is one of the hardest-working pieces in a capsule wardrobe. It can soften a feminine dress, make tailored trousers feel less serious, add comfort to a city outfit, and rescue almost any look from becoming a little too “done.” In my wardrobe, sneakers are not reserved for exercise, airports or errands. They are very much part of the outfit.

And this year, I have decided I need a beige pair.

Not want. Need. Obviously in the calm, rational, wardrobe-building sense of the word.

Why Sneakers Belong in a Capsule Wardrobe

The entire point of a capsule wardrobe is to own pieces that work with as much of your wardrobe as possible. And few shoes are quite as cooperative as a stylish pair of neutral sneakers.

I love romantic blouses, gingham dresses, wide-leg trousers, denim and soft summer layers. A pair of sneakers works with all of them. They make a dress feel more relaxed, add a little sporty contrast to feminine pieces, and allow you to actually walk around in the outfit you so carefully assembled.

Because, lovely as delicate sandals and polished loafers are, sometimes you want to spend a whole day out without your feet filing a formal complaint.

A beige sneaker is especially appealing because it fits so naturally into a softer capsule wardrobe palette. Cream, white, denim, olive green, chocolate brown, linen, gingham: beige quietly gets along with everyone. It does not shout for attention, but it makes everything look pleasingly pulled together.

My Sneaker Loyalty: Adidas and New Balance

I have always been drawn to both Adidas and New Balance. Adidas has that classic, effortless quality that looks good with practically anything, especially simple dresses, jeans and more minimal outfits. A good pair of Adidas sneakers has an easy, timeless feel that never seems to become irrelevant.

But New Balance has been tempting me more and more lately. Their sneakers have a slightly chunkier, more fashion-forward look, while still feeling wearable and practical. They add more shape to an outfit, which I especially like when styling floaty dresses, loose trousers or softer pieces that benefit from a little contrast.

There is something about pairing a pretty summer dress with a slightly substantial sneaker that makes the whole look feel more interesting. Less “I dressed for a garden party,” more “I may go to a garden party, but I also have places to be.”

This year, the sneaker I cannot stop thinking about is the New Balance 9060 in beige.

The 9060 has that chunky, sculptural sole and layered suede-and-mesh design that makes it feel more special than a plain everyday trainer. In beige, it becomes beautifully understated: soft enough to work with feminine outfits, but still modern enough to give them a little edge.

I can already imagine wearing them with almost everything in my capsule wardrobe:

• a white blouse and olive wide-leg trousers for an easy daytime look
• a gingham midi dress when I want something sweet, but not overly polished
• linen trousers and a simple tank top for warm travel days
• washed denim and a cardigan when Norwegian summer remembers that it is, technically, still Norway

They are practical, but they do not look boring. Comfortable-looking, but still stylish. Neutral, but not anonymous. In other words, exactly the sort of wardrobe purchase I am very good at convincing myself is sensible.

And honestly, it probably is.

Beige, Peach or Lavender?

Of course, deciding on the model has not completely solved my problem, because New Balance has inconveniently made the 9060 look beautiful in more than one colour.

The peach pair is cheerful and warm, and would be so pretty with summer whites, denim and tan accessories. The pale lavender version has a soft, playful feel that makes it difficult to ignore. Both are the kind of sneakers that could turn a very simple outfit into something much more memorable.

But the beige pair feels like the most sensible choice for my wardrobe. It will work across seasons, pair with more of my existing clothes, and make getting dressed easier rather than giving me another colour puzzle to solve before coffee.

This is me attempting maturity in footwear form.

The Hoka Temptation

I have also been looking at Hokas. They are incredibly popular in Norway at the moment, and I understand the appeal. They look comfortable, practical and perfect for days involving plenty of walking, which is rather useful when your ideal summer includes wandering through towns, taking unnecessary detours and being lured into every pretty café along the way.

Still, I am hesitating a little. Partly because they have become so popular that I see them absolutely everywhere, and partly because I have heard mixed comments about how well they hold up over time. That may not stop me forever, because comfort has a persuasive voice, but for now I think I am more tempted by the look of the New Balance 9060.

I want a pair that feels comfortable, yes, but also one I will genuinely want to style with dresses, trousers and the more feminine pieces in my wardrobe.

How I Would Style Beige Sneakers This Summer

With a capsule wardrobe, I like the idea of one pair of sneakers being able to shift between different moods.

With a gingham dress, beige sneakers make the look more relaxed and wearable, especially for daytime. With wide-leg linen trousers and a blouse, they add comfort without sacrificing style. With denim and a soft cardigan, they create the kind of easy outfit that looks put together even when the only real plan is coffee and a walk.

I also think neutral chunky sneakers are especially good with feminine pieces because they keep the outfit from feeling too precious. Lace, puff sleeves, floaty skirts and small checks all look a little fresher when grounded by a modern sneaker.

It is the fashion equivalent of adding a pinch of salt to something sweet. Everything suddenly makes more sense.

So, Have I Decided?

I think so.

While the peach and lavender versions are certainly doing their best to distract me, the beige New Balance 9060 feels like the pair that would earn its place in my wardrobe. It is neutral, versatile, stylish and just chunky enough to make even my prettiest dresses feel a little more current.

A beautiful pair of sneakers can be worn with nearly everything in a capsule wardrobe, and that is exactly what I want: shoes I can reach for again and again, without needing to build an entire outfit around them.

So this year, I am buying beige.

Probably.

Unless the lavender pair finds its way into my shopping basket while I am not paying attention.

or: why I suddenly want to become the sort of woman who casually owns several gingham dresses

There is something about gingham that makes me want to romanticise my entire life. It feels equal parts picnic, holiday, vintage postcard, and “I just threw this on,” even when you absolutely did not just throw it on.

It is sweet, summery and charming, but also surprisingly versatile depending on the cut. And while I know fashion loves to tell us that certain silhouettes are “for” certain body types, I would like to gently interrupt that nonsense and say this first: everyone can wear everything. Truly. Body shape advice can be helpful as inspiration, but it is not the law. The real question is always: Do I feel good in it? And ideally, Can I sit down and enjoy lunch in it without becoming overly aware of my existence?

That said, since I am apparently now emotionally invested in choosing a gingham look for myself, here are the styles currently competing for my affection.

1. The Red Off-Shoulder Mini Dress

This one is pure summer flirtation. The off-shoulder neckline draws attention to the shoulders and collarbones, while the smocked bodice gives it that lovely fitted-but-flexible feel. In other words: pretty, feminine, and forgiving — a combination I deeply respect.

This kind of silhouette is often recommended for people who like to highlight the bust or waist, and I can absolutely see why. The fitted top and playful tiered skirt create shape and movement in a very flattering way. But honestly, I think the real charm of this dress is that it works whether you are curvy, straight, petite, tall, or simply in the mood to be noticed a little.

It has a very “yes, I would like another glass of rosé” energy. Personally, I love it, though I also feel it requires a certain level of emotional readiness. This is not the dress for blending quietly into the background. This is the dress for accepting compliments with a humble but fully pleased “oh, thank you.”

2. The Green Gingham Midi Dress

If the red dress is the flirt, the green midi is the dependable favourite. She is elegant, easy, and quietly flattering in that way that makes you feel like you have your life together, even if you are mentally planning your second lunch.

The fitted bodice and fuller skirt create a beautiful sense of balance, which is why this silhouette is often loved by people who like a bit more waist definition. It can be especially lovely on hourglass shapes, but really, it works for anyone who enjoys a dress with structure on top and movement through the skirt.

I also think this is such a good option if you prefer a little more coverage or simply want something that feels graceful without trying too hard. It does not cling, it does not overcomplicate things, and it has that ideal combination of comfort and polish.

Of all the gingham options, this may be the one I am most tempted by. It feels romantic, relaxed and very wearable — which is exactly the sort of dress I end up reaching for over and over again while telling myself it counts as “a smart investment.”

3. The Yellow Gingham Mini Dress

This one is sunshine in clothing form. It is simple, cheerful, and just the right amount of sweet. The sleeveless shape and button-front detail give it a clean, easy feel, and the shorter hem keeps it light and playful.

If you like to show a bit of leg or prefer dresses that feel unfussy and uncomplicated, this is such a lovely choice. It is also a great example of a silhouette that does not feel the need to aggressively sculpt the body in order to be flattering. Sometimes a dress can simply skim the body, feel breezy and charming, and leave it at that.

I think that is something we do not talk about enough — not every flattering dress needs to cinch, squeeze or engineer you into a whole new architectural concept. Sometimes it is enough that it feels good, moves nicely, and makes you want to go outside and order an iced coffee.

This would be my pick for a day when I want to look summery and cute without overthinking it. Which, admittedly, is how I would like to dress most of the time, even if I then proceed to overthink it anyway.

4. The Brown Gingham Peplum Top and Wide-Leg Trouser Set

Now this one is for the part of me that wants to look chic, comfortable and faintly expensive all at once. A peplum top with wide-leg trousers is such a good alternative if you love gingham but do not necessarily want another dress.

The peplum shape creates definition at the waist and a softer shape over the hips, while the wide-leg trousers add length and balance. This kind of set can be especially appealing if you enjoy a more structured silhouette, or if you like outfits that feel polished without being restrictive.

Peplum is sometimes suggested for people who want to accentuate the waist or create a bit more volume through the lower half, but again, these are styling ideas — not rules. The beauty of a set like this is that it gives shape without demanding discomfort, and elegance without requiring you to stand perfectly still all day.

Also, wide-leg trousers have the rare ability to make you feel composed even when your actual internal state is somewhere between “pleasantly hungry” and “why did I bring the wrong handbag.” For that alone, I am listening.

So… which one would I choose?

This is where things become difficult, because clearly I would like to be four slightly different women this summer.

The red one says, I am fun and a little dramatic.
The green one says, I am soft, elegant, and probably carrying a book.
The yellow one says, I am cheerful, spontaneous, and definitely saying yes to dessert.
The gingham set says, I am polished, practical, and suspiciously well put together.

And the truth is, I love all of them for different reasons — which is really the whole point. Yes, different cuts will highlight different things. An off-shoulder neckline draws the eye upward. A defined waist creates shape. Wide-leg trousers lengthen the line of the body. A shorter hem shows off more leg. But none of that means one style belongs to one body and not another.

It just means clothes do different things — and you are allowed to choose what suits your taste, your mood, your comfort level, and the version of yourself you feel like dressing that day.

At the moment, I am leaning toward the green midi dress… but if you ask me again in ten minutes, I may very well have talked myself into the red one for the drama.

Norwegian summer is beautiful, bright and slightly unreliable. One day, you are drinking iced coffee in the sun with bare ankles and a suspiciously optimistic outlook on life. The next, you are questioning every wardrobe decision you have ever made while searching for a cardigan.

Still, that is exactly why I want to make the most of it. Summer here is brief enough to feel precious, and I would rather spend it eating strawberries, lingering over lunch and taking the scenic route home than standing in front of an overfilled wardrobe insisting I have nothing to wear.

For me, a feminine summer capsule wardrobe is not about owning as little as possible. It is about choosing a small collection of pieces that work beautifully together, feel special without being impractical, and can handle everything from sunny café mornings to unexpectedly chilly evenings.

This summer, I am building my wardrobe around soft white blouses, olive linen, washed black denim, delicate lace and a few accessories that make simple outfits feel considered. Romantic, but not overly sweet. Practical, but never dull.

The Key Pieces in My Summer Capsule Wardrobe

The White Eyelet Blouse

A white eyelet blouse is one of those pieces that makes an outfit look instantly more thoughtful. The delicate cutwork, softly flared sleeves and scalloped hem give it a romantic feel, while the clean white colour keeps it easy to style.

I love wearing feminine blouses with pieces that are a little more relaxed or grounded, such as wide-leg trousers or dark denim. It keeps the look pretty without drifting into “I may have dressed for a garden party that does not exist” territory.

The Washed Black Denim Maxi Dress

The washed black denim dress is the slightly cooler cousin of the classic summer dress. It still has a flattering, feminine silhouette, but the darker denim gives it structure and a little edge.

1. For a Sunny Day in Town

2. For Dinner Outside

The black denim dress is ideal for a summer evening when I want to look dressed up, but not overly formal. The lace scarf softens the darker denim and adds a romantic detail without requiring a completely different outfit.

This combination would work just as well for a small restaurant in the city as for dinner somewhere by the water. It also has the advantage of surviving a temperature drop after sunset with considerably more dignity than a very tiny sundress.

3. For a Slow Summer Morning

Instead of packing a completely separate outfit for every possible plan, I would bring a few favourite pieces that can shift from daytime wandering to dinner simply by changing a scarf or adding a touch of jewellery. Less suitcase chaos, more room for things you did not need but bought anyway.

I do not believe in a summer wardrobe that only works on perfect days with clear skies and twenty-four degrees. A good capsule wardrobe should handle real life: spontaneous invitations, shifting weather, long afternoons out, cool evenings and the occasional day when summer briefly forgets what season it is.

With two beautiful blouses, one versatile dress, a pair of wide-leg trousers, polished loafers, a woven bag and a couple of charming scarves, there are plenty of outfits to carry you through the season.

Because summer is far too short to spend it staring into your wardrobe, wondering why nothing seems to go together.
